Updating Old Baseboard Heaters | Easy DIY 2025

If you have baseboard heating in your home, you know how unsightly they can be. Especially if they are old, rusted and damaged or painted over 100 times. Luckily I’ve found an easy solution that at least brings them into the current century and makes them look a little cleaner, nicer and more modern looking.

The Before

We had a combination of damaged and rusted baseboards, newer baseboards and baseboards that were painted over countless times.

With all the remodeling we were doing in the house, this was something I wanted to also update since they were such an eye sore.

I remember when we were looking at houses before we purchased this home, I saw a house that had some more modern looking baseboard heaters. When I asked our plumber about it who also does baseboard heating, he had no idea what I was talking about. He said there was only one type/style of baseboard heaters. So I did some research… and I stumbled upon a company that sells covers for them. I realized that was exactly what was used in that updated house.

They are galvanized steel panel covers that slip over the existing heaters, coming in different styles, lengths and colors. At first I was afraid they wouldn’t let enough heat out, but they’ve proven to still let the hot air flow through without issue. At this point I’ve updated every baseboard heater in my home with these covers. Although I would still wish to not have baseboard heaters all along our floors throughout our house at all, but this is what we’re working with!

New modern baseboard heat covers

The end caps and front cover pieces on the old baseboard heaters easily come off, unless they are totally bent or have a thick layer of paint attaching them to wall then you might need some tools to assist. I first used a utility knife to cut a line along where the caulking and paint meet the cover so I didn’t rip any paint off the wall when removing them.

The cover panels slip over the existing heaters without any tools required, and you can add end caps, corner pieces and divider pieces to fully customize to what you have in your space. They are so easy to install and really make such a difference updating the space, giving a clean, minimalistic and more modern aesthetic.
